Major Flakes…Record
Snowfall in February at Three
Mile Lake
March
14, 2006
After a rather slow start to the winter season in most of central
and northern Ontario, winter
arrived with a vengeance in February in the Almaguin
District. The District was one of the
few areas in the province with decent snowmobiling in January, but this would
prove to be nothing compared to February.
Although snowfall records are not kept specifically for the Almaguin Highlands, snowfall in North
Bay for February was 164.0 cm, burying the old record
of 117.6 cm in 1939. Muskoka
measured in at 155.6 cm, beating the 1936 mark of 132.1 cm. For those who frequent Three
Mile Lake
in the winter, it’s safe to say that the record for February was broken there
as well!
So, if you’re lamenting the dull grey look of Southern
Ontario winters, there’s probably still time to head north and see the bright
white stuff…it will be a while before this all melts!
