The Almaguin Highlands recently lost a well-known and popular writer, environmentalist and politician, as Richard Thomas succumbed to injuries sustained in a tragic accident on Highway 11 at Burk’s Falls.  The Reeve of Armour Township died on Wednesday, February 22, almost 2 months after the December 27 accident.  He was 74.

Richard was a well-known advocate for environmental issues and a keen observer of life.  His ‘And Another Thing…’ articles have been a fixture in the Almaguin News for many years.  Richard was well-known throughout the country for his work in radio and, probably most famously, for his near upset of Ernie Eves in the 1981 provincial election.  In that election, Richard lost to the future Ontario Premier by a mere 6 votes.  Richard also ran for the leadership of the Ontario Liberals.

Residents of the Three Mile Lake area will remember Richard from his visits to our Annual Meeting, where he would patiently listen and answer questions on local issues.  His calm manner, unique approach and eloquent descriptions were welcome additions to our meetings.

There will be a celebration of Richard’s life on April 8, 2006, between 2:00pm and 5:00pm at the Burk’s Falls arena/community centre.  The Thomas family have requested donations in Richard’s memory to the local hospital of your choice.  The Three Mile Lake Community Club will be making a donation, on behalf of its members, to the Burk’s Falls Health Centre.

Richard is survived by his wife Jenny, 4 children, and 5 grand-children.
