As reported in the Almaguin News in the January 26, 2005 issue, recent decisions by the Ministry of Transportation  (MTO) could threaten the popular Searle’s Restaurant and Gas Bar on Highway 11 just south of Katrine.

The Highway 11 Four-Laning project between Emsdale and Burk’s Falls calls for the construction of a service road to improve access to local businesses.  However, Searle’s has apparently been bypassed in this thinking and service road access to Searle’s is not part of the plan.  In fact, the only access to the business following completion of the four-laning project will be for travelers heading south on Highway 11.  Searle’s, and the neighbouring Trading Post, have long been popular stops for both local residents and visitors all year round.
