All-Candidates Meeting Sponsored by Local Lake Associations…Saturday, October 7, 2006

September 24, 2006

The local Lake Associations in Armour Township, led by the Three Mile Lake Community Club, have banded together to help organize an All-Candidates meeting leading up to the municipal election on Monday, November 13, 2006.  The meeting has been set for 3:00pm on Saturday, October 7, 2006 at the Armour/Ryerson/Burk’s Falls Arena in Burk’s Falls.

Why should this matter to you?

Because, as a taxpaying citizen of Armour Township (even if you’re only a seasonal resident), you have a right to vote.  The area is going through many changes, as the Highway 11 four-laning completes and the pressure to develop increases.  Also, in the past, the term of office for municipal representatives has been 2 years, but this has now changed to 4 years.  Choosing the right candidates becomes crucial as we enter the next 4 years of development.

Why do I need to understand the platforms of the local candidates?

Seasonal residents outnumber full-time residents in Armour Township by a factor of more than 2:1.  The tax base from seasonal residents is huge; therefore, your concerns should be heard and understood by the politicians who represent you.

Even if I understood all of the platforms, it will be difficult for me to take the time to vote.

Not this election.  All voting will be ‘vote by mail’.  This means it is no more difficult for a seasonal voter to take part than it is for a local resident.

Why are the Lake Associations trying to organize an All-Candidates Meeting?

The only other All-Candidates meeting planned is on a Wednesday evening (October 11).  Given that this is clearly not a convenient day for most cottagers, we decided to organize a meeting on a weekend when most cottagers are around…thus, Thanksgiving weekend was chosen.  We picked Saturday afternoon so that we wouldn’t interrupt family dinners on the Sunday or Monday.

Your participation will help greatly in making the voice of cottagers heard!
